SPIRIT&SPA READING 9/20, 6-7 PM, at MONTAGUE CENTER LIBRARY
Board members Sheryl Sadler-Twyon and David James of The National Spiritual Alliance in Lake Pleasant, believers of the core Spiritualist principle that human beings can -- and do -- communicate with Spirit World souls of the living-dead, will read excerpts from Spirit and Spa (a joint publication of the late-Louise Shattuck and James) and answer questions Wednesday (9/20) from 6-7 p.m. at the Montague Center Library. The book is a memoiristic and old photo portrait of Lake Pleasant and its Spiritualist roots and traces three generations of the Bickford-Shattuck family’s intimate involvement in the founding and flowering of the smallest and youngest of Montague’s five villages. Sadler-Twyon’s connection is through her paternal great grandparents, Frank and Myra Wilbur, he an herbalist and she a medium. The Wilburs were contemporaries of the Bickford-Shattucks in the pioneering days of the Spiritualist summer campground from the 1880s through the early decades of the 20th Century, as it morphed from tent sites to Victorian cottages to a deluxe hotel and a handful of mansions of millionaires. For half a century from the late-1870s into the Roaring 1920s, Lake Pleasant was the largest Spiritualist gathering place in the United States. The ongoing presence of The National Spiritual Alliance makes it the oldest continuously-existing year-round same-site Spiritualist center in the nation.
