Forest Fires in Massachusetts: Public Program & Discussion

Saturday, September 12, 2026, 11:00 am until 1:00 pm
National Spiritual Alliance, 2 Montague Ave, Lake Pleasant MA

Have you ever wondered what the actual risk of wildfires is in Massachusetts?

Why is planned burning used in our forests? Is it helping? Could it be doing harm? And how should we think about forest management, conservation, and wildfire risk here in our own state?

Forest Fires in Massachusetts: Public Program & Discussion

Presented by Save Massachusetts Forests and partner organizations

Saturday, September 12
11:00 AM–1:00 PM
The National Spiritual Alliance
2 Montague Avenue
Lake Pleasant, Massachusetts

Free and open to the public
Attend in person or by Zoom

Join us for a timely public conversation about wildfire, forest management, conservation, public lands, and our relationship with the natural world.

The program will feature national experts, including ecologist, author, and photographer George Wuerthner. George has visited more than 400 designated wilderness areas and more than 200 National Park System units. He spent 12 years as Ecological Projects Director for Doug Tompkins’s Foundation for Deep Ecology and now serves as Executive Director of Public Lands Media. He has published 38 books, including Wildfire: A Century of Failed Forest Policy, Protecting the Wild: Parks and Wilderness Foundation for Conservation, and Keeping the Wild: Against the Domestication of the Earth.

The discussion will explore wildfire risk in Massachusetts, prescribed burning, forest management practices, conservation, and broader questions about how we understand and protect forest ecosystems.

Following the indoor program, participants are invited to join the speakers for a walk at the Montague Plains from 1:30–2:30 PM.

ABOUT COMMUNITY PROGRAMS AT TNSA

The National Spiritual Alliance is pleased to provide space for this community program. For more than a century, TNSA has been a place of scientific, spiritual, and personal inquiry, and we welcome informed discussion, respectful debate, and opportunities to explore different ideas as part of our continuing pursuit of understanding and our principle of “the pursuit of truth.”

Programs presented by outside organizations, speakers, or community partners may include perspectives that do not necessarily represent the views of TNSA. By welcoming a range of thoughtful voices into our space, we hope to encourage curiosity, dialogue, and deeper understanding within our community.
