Memorist (noun) - one who writes or recites a history, biography, memoir, or similar work containing memories.
We are sensual beings, collecting information from the natural world through our senses of sight, sound, taste, touch, and intuition. In this 3 part workshop and craft series, The Sensual Memorist, we will explore how our senses have the potential to spark vivid memories and how we as writers can utilize these sensual stimuli to both uncover and record our memories in powerful new ways. Each of the 3 sessions will be devoted to delving deeply into 1-2 senses and the role they play for us as embodied creatures, as well as reading and analyzing short pieces illustrating the sense of the day. Over the course of the series, we will be collectors of sensual material, poetically and lyrically crafting prose and poetry that brings to light our hidden memories: the fresh sweetness of an orange on a cold winter’s day; driving with the windows down with your favorite song playing on a cool summer night; the paper-thin softness of your grandmother’s hands. And in the process of creating our sense-inspired memories, we will be making memories, as a collective, of our own!
Sessions include short lessons on the craft of writing plus gentle and supportive group and instructor feedback on piece written during the session.
All levels welcome. Though this series is developed for adults, minors are considered with accompanying guardian. Reach out with any questions.
Writers are invited to read at the Tea and Crumpets Society gathering on Thursday, November 12. Friends and family welcome!
