Pond Lily Project 2026 Artist Cohort

We are thrilled to announce the 2026 Pond Lily Project Artist Cohort.

Rooted in the symbolism of the pond lily — resilience, emergence, and beauty rising from still waters — the Pond Lily Project honors both the spiritual and creative traditions of Lake Pleasant while supporting local songwriters in meaningful artistic growth.

This year’s Artists in Residence were selected not only for their exceptional talent, but for their alignment with the mission and purpose of the Pond Lily Project: a commitment to artistry, authenticity, collaboration, and community. They are powerful individual voices, and together they form a cohort that reflects both musical excellence and shared spirit.

Together, this group represents an exciting blend of emerging and established voices, grounded in community and artistic exploration.

The Pond Lily Project is a program of The National Spiritual Alliance, building a vibrant creative ecosystem rooted in Lake Pleasant’s rich spiritual and artistic history.

2026 Artists in Residence

Vanessa Brewster

Vanessa Brewster is a writer, musician, educator, and community organizer based in Greenfield, MA. She is the Vice President of Looky Here, a community arts nonprofit, and her work centers on publishing experimental and collaborative art books. Vanessa recently released her debut collection of short fiction, No Such Thing as Fiction, and is currently working on her first album of music.

Matt Emmer

Matt Emmer is a singer-songwriter based in Western Massachusetts whose music bridges the many avenues of American folk music with contemporary sounds. Drawing from the deep well of traditional song as well as the raw honesty of indie rock and improvisation, Matt creates music that is both rooted and exploratory.

They have performed at venues including Club Passim, Tarrytown Music Hall, and the Clearwater Festival, and have shared stages with iconic artists like Pete Seeger, Bernice Johnson Reagon, Jackson Browne, Janis Ian, Suzanne Vega, and Arlo Guthrie. Matt’s music is rooted in tradition and guided by a spirit of openness, inviting audiences into a shared community with each song.

Rachel Davis

Rachel Davis is a Florida-born singer-songwriter and music therapist based in Western Massachusetts. A former orchestral bassoonist, she discovered her songwriting voice while living in Appalachia, immersed in the bluegrass and folk communities. For the past eight years, she has worked as a music therapist in mental health and end-of-life care - experiences that quietly shape the emotional depth and honesty of her songs. Davis writes with indie-folk tenderness and a restless sense of longing, tracing love and loss, green places, and the inevitable endings that shape us all.

E. Horace Winston III

E. Horace Winston III performs an unencumbered repertoire of original compositions and songs drawn 1920-30s Tin Pan Alley classics, American rhythm & blues, Jazz Standards, folk traditions, and musicals. He studied under Miss Honey with debts owed to Leon Redbone, Fats Waller, Claudia Cardinale, and the Owl & the Pussy Cat. His combo, Midnight Swerve, has played in venues such as the legendary Fitzgerald Theater in Saint Paul, Minnesota and the Academy of Music in Northampton, Massachusetts.

Carly Lara

carly lara is an indie, alternative folk singer-songwriter performer and multi-instrumentalist based in Western & Central MA, who has mainly been playing solo and also can be seen accompanied by two fellow bandmates. With angsty undertones, and introspective lyrics, carly is relentlessly honest on the interpersonal conflict and emotional turmoil that is often an inevitable part of being in your early twenties, and explores concepts of impermanence, deep contemplation, and externalization in her music. Carly brings vulnerability to different levels, storytelling on themes of family & relationship dynamics, misperceptions, and inhibiting feelings of self doubt, allowing listeners a chance to reflect on their own difficulties in life. As carly begins this new chapter of sharing her own music, the aim is to move away from feelings of indecision and constantly questioning herself, to a self accepting framework of trusting her creative spirit and drive to guide her forward and move beyond life’s hurdles to regain self worth, let go of self doubt, and let curiosity lead her forward to achieve emotional adaptation, acceptance of what is out of her hands.

2026 Artist Mentors

Tobey Sol LaRoche

Host of Voices in the Village (Every 3rd Tuesday of the month)

Luke DeRoy

Facilitator of the Songwriter Development Circle (Every 4th Tuesday of the month)

Whether flying solo or leading his band, RED LOVES BLUE, Luke DeRoy’s songwriting is intimate, raw, and packs a punch. His authentic energy blends with a velvet touch that moves from D’Angelo to the Deftones and back again. From early performances on the Warped Tour to captivating living rooms packed with listeners, DeRoy’s music is about empathy, resilience, and the ways we take care of each other.

Olivia Nied

Host of Jam in the Round (Every 2nd Sunday of the month)

Olivia Nied (she/they) is a queer/trans singer/songwriter, whose music is genre defying, and buoyed by a steady current of radical joy and explosive guitar work. Her music reflects her lived experiences as a neuroqueer weirdo (in the best of ways) and as a self described "hysterical dame", and she has shared the stage alongside artists such as Loudon Wainwright III, Niki Luparelli, and Doctora Xingona. Her 2024 album release "Just Enough" has been featured on queer playlists in The Netherlands, and she has performed internationally in both the UK and France. When not performing solo, she plays drums in local surf/punk band "SexWave" bass in the riot girl punk band "Sunshine and the Rainbows" and guitar/vocals in Punk/Rock duo "Star Lane Sox."

Intro to Tarot with Rev. Kary Hays

A 2-Part Live Zoom Workshop with The National Spiritual Alliance

If you’ve ever felt drawn to Tarot but also a little intimidated by it, this class is for you.

On March 7 and March 14 at 10:00 AM ET, The National Spiritual Alliance is hosting a two-part live Zoom workshop: Intro to Tarot with Rev. Kary Hays of The Soul’s Essence LLC.

Whether you are brand new to Tarot or have always been curious but unsure where to begin, this workshop offers a grounded, intuitive way in. No pressure. No overwhelm. No memorizing 78 flashcards.

Just learning to listen.

Rev. Kary Hays brings years of experience working with Tarot, Runes, Bones, and Stones as sacred tools for spiritual direction. Through her work at The Soul’s Essence LLC, she connects with Spirit Helpers and the Essence of the Soul to offer intuitive guidance that illuminates each person’s path. Her passion is helping people access their own inner knowing, and that approach shapes this class from beginning to end.

One of the most empowering aspects of Rev. Kary’s teaching is that you won’t be asked to memorize every card. Instead, you’ll discover how Tarot works as a living symbolic language. Once you understand the structure and flow of the deck, interpretation becomes natural. The symbols begin to speak. Patterns emerge. Confidence builds.

In this supportive, interactive learning space, you will explore:

• The structure of the Tarot (Major and Minor Arcana)
• How to understand all 78 cards without memorization
• Symbolism and intuitive interpretation
• Practical spreads you can begin using right away
• Building confidence in your own intuitive guidance

This is about developing your own relationship with the cards, not copying someone else’s system.

The Pond Lily Project

A Community-Centered Music & Artist Development Initiative

Rooted in Lake Pleasant

The Pond Lily Project is a community-centered music and artist development initiative rooted in Lake Pleasant, Massachusetts, home of the historic The National Spiritual Alliance (TNSA).

Inspired by TNSA's logo, the pond lily—long a symbol of resilience, emergence, and beauty—the project draws on the idea that creativity often rises from unseen depths. In Lake Pleasant, a place shaped by spiritual inquiry, artistic expression, and community gathering for over a century, the Pond Lily Project continues this tradition by offering space where music, mentorship, and connection can unfold together.

About the Pond Lily Project

Rising from murky depths, the pond lily draws nourishment from below the surface to bloom into something resilient and beautiful. In the same way, the Pond Lily Project is grounded in the belief that creativity often emerges through deep listening, honest self-expression, and shared experience—and that when artists are given space, support, and community, that beauty can rise and be offered outward.

At its heart, the Pond Lily Project recognizes music as shared energy—moving between musicians playing together, between artist and audience, and between creative communities and the people they serve. When held with intention, music becomes a connective and positive force in the world, capable of opening minds, strengthening understanding, and fostering collective care.

Program Structure: A Four-Part Model

The Pond Lily Project is designed as an interconnected ecosystem with four core components, each supporting a different aspect of artistic and community development.

Songwriter-in-the-Round Concert Series

Songwriter Development Circle

A curated listening-room concert series highlighting original songwriting and shared storytelling. An intentional creative space where songwriters—across generations and experience levels—come together to share works-in-progress, explore songwriting as both craft and expression, and learn through conversation, feedback, and collaboration.
  • Series of summer concerts in the Thompson Temple Sanctuary in Lake Pleasant.

  • Each concert features three songwriters in an intimate, audience-centered format

  • The series culminates in a final Songwriter-in-the-Round concert at the Shea Theater Performing Arts Center in September 2026, featuring all Pond Lily Project Artists

  • Emphasis on trust, reflection, and collective growth

  • Open to artists of varied styles and approaches (not limited to acoustic or solo performers)

  • Led by Pond Lily Project Resident Artist Mentor Luke DeRoy

  • Included for Pond Lily Project Artists; open to the public for a fee

Music Business & Professional Development Workshops

Community Open Mic Series

A series of 3 practical workshops led by industry professionals designed to support sustainable creative lives, including: A monthly, welcoming open mic series presented by Pond Lily Project Resident Artist Mentor & Host, Tobey Sol LaRoche.
  • Marketing, branding, and audience development

  • Recording, sound, and demo creation

  • Booking, touring, and navigating the music ecosystem

  • Workshops are open to the broader community and are included for Pond Lily Project Artists.

  • Designed as an accessible entry point for musicians and music lovers alike

  • Encourages participation, discovery, exploration and intergenerational exchange

  • Builds bridges between artists and audiences, building connection in the community

  • Each Pond Lily Project Artist in Residence will be offered a feature slot at one open mic during 2026

Pond Lily Project: Artists in Residence

Five musicians will be selected through an open application process to participate as Pond Lily Project Artists in Residence.

The residency welcomes intergenerational artists and values both emerging and experienced voices.

Artists in Residence Receive:

  • Full participation in the Songwriter Development Circle

  • Complimentary access to all 3 Music Business & Professional Development Workshops

  • A featured performance at one community open mic (optional)

  • Participation in the final Songwriter-in-the-Round concert at the Shea Theater in September 2026 (date TBA)

  • Professional audio and video recording of one original song developed during the project

  • A professional promotional photo session

All Artists in Residence, along with the Resident Artist Mentor and Community Host, will participate in Live from Thompson Temple, a recording session sponsored by the Sean Byrne Foundation in the Thompson Temple Sanctuary.

Recordings will be distributed through partner and sponsor platforms, including community television and affiliated media outlets, extending the reach of participating artists beyond the room and into the wider community.

Artists in Residence are not charged to participate. The residency is rooted in reciprocity—through engagement, collaboration, and active participation in community events that help build audiences and strengthen the local cultural landscape.

Participation Requirements & Key Dates

Applicants should be able to commit to:

Application & Selection Process

Artists in Residence for the Pond Lily Project will be selected through an open application process followed by a jury-based review.

Applications will be reviewed by a small jury made up of project mentors, community partners, and sponsors, representing a range of artistic, community, and organizational perspectives. The selection process is designed to be thoughtful, transparent, and aligned with the values of the project.

Rather than focusing solely on résumé-style credentials, the jury will look holistically at each application, with attention to:

  • Artistic voice and intention
A sense of the applicant’s songwriting practice, creative direction, and willingness to engage in an exploratory, collaborative process.

  • Commitment and availability
The ability to participate fully in the project’s timeline, including development sessions, community events, and the final concert.

  • Connection to community
An interest in how music functions as shared experience and shared energy—between artists, audiences, and the communities they are part of and serve.

  • Motivation for applying
Why the applicant is drawn to the Pond Lily Project at this moment, and what they hope to give to and receive from the experience.

  • Openness to collaboration and growth
A willingness to engage across generations, styles, and experience levels in a non-competitive, supportive environment.

The Pond Lily Project values intergenerational participation, diverse creative backgrounds, and artists at different stages of their journey. There is no single “correct” style, genre, or career path expected.

Final selections will be based on how well each applicant aligns with the spirit, structure, and commitments of the project as a whole.

November Psychic Medium Fair just around the corner!

A Day of Spirit, Insight, and Healing Returns to Lake Pleasant

Lake Pleasant has long been a gathering place for people seeking clarity, connection, and a deeper sense of meaning—and this month’s Psychic Medium Fair carries that tradition forward with warmth and intention.

On Saturday, November 29, The National Spiritual Alliance will open the doors of Thompson Temple for a full day of readings, Reiki, and soulful support offered by some of the most trusted practitioners in our community. What makes this fair feel special isn’t just the services—it’s the people who provide them.

The Mediums: Clear, Compassionate, and Deeply Experienced

If you’ve attended one of our previous fairs, you already know how grounding and uplifting a good reading can be. This month, we’re honored to host three gifted mediums, each bringing decades of experience and a unique way of working with Spirit.

Rev. Joanne Matthews
A pillar in the Spiritualist community, Rev. Joanne has spent more than 30 years delivering evidential, heart-centered messages. Her readings are known for being both gentle and deeply validating—often offering exactly the detail someone needs to feel connected, comforted, and understood.

Kary Hays
Kary’s intuitive gifts blend clairvoyance, clairsentience, and a natural empathic sensitivity. Clients often describe her readings as “supportive,” “clear,” and “exactly what I needed today.” She excels at helping people navigate transitions and reconnect with their inner sense of direction.

Rev. Elaine San Soucie
Rev. Elaine brings decades of certification, study, and devoted service to Spiritualism. Her messages are empowering, specific, and centered on healing. She has a remarkable ability to help clients see their path with renewed clarity and confidence.

Reiki & Energy Healing: A Restorative Experience

Alongside the mediums, we’re also welcoming Kerry Baird, whose healing presence is as steady as it is transformative. Kerry is a Reiki Master, trained under Rev. Sheryl Sadler-Twyon, as well as a Certified Hypnotherapist and Certified Mind-Body Coach. Her 25-minute sessions offer energetic realignment, emotional release, and a grounded sense of peace—perfect for anyone feeling stuck or seeking balance.

Why This Fair Matters

In a time when so many people are seeking direction, healing, or just a moment to breathe, events like this create space for gentle guidance and community connection. Whether you’re looking for answers, comfort, or simply a chance to explore Spiritualism, you’ll find a warm welcome waiting for you.
